The upcoming major release of Centreon Infra Monitoring (CIM) 26.10 LTS will mark a key milestone in the modernization of our software architecture. To ensure optimal performance, enhanced security, and long-term stability, this new version will extend its compatibility to next-generation operating systems. Users will be able to deploy CIM 26.10 on Enterprise Linux distributions (RHEL, AlmaLinux, Oracle Linux) versions 9 and 10, as well as the upcoming Debian 13 major release.

However, this technological transition requires strategic choices to maintain our quality standards. Consequently, official support for Debian 12 and Enterprise Linux 8 (EL8) will be discontinued with this release. These older operating systems no longer align with the 3-year lifecycle inherent to our Long Term Support (LTS) versions. We invite our users to start planning their infrastructure upgrades to the targeted platforms now, ensuring a smooth transition and full enjoyment of the innovations in CIM 26.10 LTS.

Good to know, i would be curious to see what kind of technical blockers the team faced during those new OS kinds.

Mainly updates to our dependencies: PHP 8.4, Symphony, Java, MariaDB and MySQL, etc.

This raises a question regarding the monitoring of legacy equipment.

During our migration to AlmaLinux 9, we encountered several issues related to the stricter security policies of the new operating system. As a result, we had to keep one poller running on AlmaLinux 8 to continue monitoring some legacy devices.

Since these are our customers' devices, it is obviously not possible to require them to replace their hardware or modernize their infrastructure (although we would certainly like them to! 😉).

With EL8 support being dropped, what simple options will be available to continue monitoring legacy systems, such as old iLO2 interfaces or insecure HTTP applications that rely on outdated protocols or ciphers? Will there be a recommended workaround or supported approach for these use cases?

Hi @sdouce, while RHEL 8 is indeed supported until 2029, we cannot support every OS and version, as the effort required regarding quality and complexity is too important (same for PHP, Java, MySQL dependencies).

For insecure HTTP applications, the centreon_protocol_http.pl Centreon Plugin have options to use insecure mode (--insecure) or to force SSL/TSL version with curl or lwp backend.

iLO 2 is very old technology (last firmware in 2018), and the current version is iLO7. Unfortunately, you will need to switch protocols to monitor servers.
